ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!It is going to be one of those days! First, I wake up an hour early (which is already 30 minutes earlier than normal as today is gym day!) as I must have knocked the time on the alarm clock on an hour. Then I go down and make lunch and leave it in the lounge. 30minutes later the cats walk into the office and they should have been in the kitchen still. I chase them downstairs and find whats left of lunch on the floor. Smack the cats as I'm not sure which one it was, until 2 seconds later when Winston starts throwing up. Clean up. Make lunch again. Go down the gym. I now have *plenty* of agression to work off at the gym! Monday, January 28, 2002
You know the beard is growing well when you need to take a trimmer to it! Its not the only thing that is growing well as my bonsai tree that Kristen gave me for Christmas is spurting all over the place, AND the twig that looked like it was dead is also budding!
My degree course of Computers, Management and Electronicsat Salford University now has an email list for its past students to keep in touch.
Hmmmmm - I used to use Netmind.com as a way of finding out when web pages changed and receiving an email. Their service was free and has worked well for several years now although their server is soooooo slow at logging on to the control panel (and I had a couple of accounts which were impossible to consolidate into one). However Gretchen of Lockergnome fame pointed out the use of SpyOnIt which seems to do the job a lot better (although i've not had any reports back just yet!). The interface is a bit quirky when adding web pages but it is not bad. When I work out how I'll add a spyonit button to this page! Update:Netmind are now charging their customers as they have been taken over by another company, but it is still too slow! (existing users can get their data back in read only format which is what I tried to do)
The Register has an interesting article about the capabilities of bosses. To save my boss's blushes I am not going to comment (that and he could be reading this!) Tuesday, January 22, 2002
Wooohooo - the latest Petra album arrived today so I've been listening to it. Tracks four and five are swopped on the cd which confuses things a little, and "We Want To See Jesus Lifted High" is brilliant! (and Bob Hartman is back - yippeeee!)
Well managed to upload some files via ftp this morning, only to find that they have disabled the ability to send email from web pages, so back to the search again :-( Monday, January 21, 2002
Well Domaindlx didn't come up with the goods, although they created an account for me, they never sent me the join up letter with upload instructions or password. If I request the password again, then the system sends me an email and again refers to the signup letter! An email to the new accounts department returns with a mailbox full email. I've set up an account with 7 host now at this URL so we'll see how it goes. Sunday, January 20, 2002
Whatever you do, do NOT install Exchange Service Pack 2 for 2000 unless you have a global catalog server on your LAN. If you dont and you do install Exchange will not start - trust me, I found out the hard way (at 10.30pm on Wednesday night!) Saturday, January 19, 2002
zigalbea is still not appearing on google, Just over a month after posting it on my website and I know they crawl this page!
Anyone had any strange experiences with outlook refusing to display one particular folder? My folder in outlook 9 times out of 10 refuses to display and I have to keep swapping from it to another folder and back again until it stops displaying "Outlook is unable to display this folder"
Weird! Looking through my website logs this morning I noticed that someone had searched on the following:- duck alerts you of incoming call at Google. And although I hadn't mentioned all those words in the same sentence, they were there on the same page. You will have to search yourself to find out why! Thursday, January 17, 2002
I've been on the quest to find another archive/zip program instead of winzip. I tried winace but got fed up with the nag screens. UltimateZip is buggy but Filzip is my preferred solution at the moment, it seems to be pretty good.
Email back from Life Fitness to say a floor is 3 metres so I am doing well over the minimum required to climb Ben Nevis - now if only I had more time I could do Mount Blanc!
http://www.gymuser.co.uk looks like a good site which also lists all the gyms in your town or postcode! You may find a gym you didnt know existed! It gave me four gyms in the area that I live! Tuesday, January 15, 2002
Hmmm - I am trying to do the LifeFitness Mountain Challenge, but my gym insists that there are three floors to one metre - so they must have midgets in their houses. An email to LifeFitness says the competition is only valid in the uk, but they are based in the US! Monday, January 14, 2002

After re-reading PC-Pro I noticed the old Quick Search tool - tried it out and good results too. First download the ie5web accessories file from Microsoft (yes it works on ie6 too!) Once installed, ensure your links toolbar is enabled and then click on QuickSearch. Create New,choose a name like gw, Custom URL then add the following:- http://www.google.com/search?q=%s&btnG=Google+Search Select try it and search for something on the web. Then once google has opened the search results, click on images and copy paste the resulting url into a new search shortcut called gi. Do the same for Groups, calling it gg Ensure that you replace the word you looked for with %s
As an update to my cdrom problems below, I swapped the cdroms around on two machines and each of the drives worked in the other machine (having failed to work on both the original machines). No idea why but it works!
Grrrrr - my IIS Server with email wasn't sending out email although everything looked ok. Discovered that instead of putting the ip address of the real mail server in the Smart host, you are meant to put [] around the ip address and it starts working - woohoo! Monday, January 07, 2002
If anyone knows how to fix a cdrom not working in windows 98 (98 does not even see that it is there) yet it works fine in dos/linux then let me know!
I have been doing some asp stuff in the office the past couple of days so I have signed up with Domaindlx for a asp,mdb and email account - will be interesting to see how well it works. Keep an eye out on this page for more updates on the programming!
On a plus side, I did get a reply from Freeserve when I complained that the number I was dialing had not worked for four days with permanent engaged tones. I found an alternative by using Google and searching on Freeserve phone numbers - see my post on Google
Freeserve is sooooooooo slow tonight! I guess its all the emails they are sending out to people to say how wonderful they are and how they've upgraded the service recently!
Interestingly they reckon that you will NOT be able to connect to Freeserve if you have the free call minder (1571) and a message waiting. Well if that was the case, why has it taken about six months to inform people this is the reason they can't connect? Actually its a complete load of baloney (or zigalbea) and its possible to stop you connecting if you have the wait for a dialtone option selected in the dial up networking option. Remove this and you will be able to connect whenever! <SCRIPT LANGUAGE=JavaScript SRC=http://www.wc.cc.va.us/services/news/channel.asp?c=http://blogspace.com/rss/feeds/blogify?url=http%3A%2F%2Fhome.clara.co.uk%2Fhelsby%2Fblogger.html&public=1></SCRIPT> |
